"The early death of Keith Olkewicz, an employee and colleague, is a shocking loss," Superintendent Dr. Norman Fernandez said.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this immensely difficult time. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones."
Olkewicz began working for the district in Nov. 2012 as a paraprofessional, the district said. He was later elected president of the Para Professional Association with the Jersey City Education Association and New Jersey Education Association.
Former Gov. Jim McGreevey, who is running for mayor of Jersey City, paid tribute to Olkewicz on Facebook.
"Keith Olkewicz...has been a blessing of decency, dedication, and determination for our Jersey City School District," McGreevey said. "May he Rest in Peace.
Olkewicz had recently attended an Education Support Professionals conference in Atlantic City and celebrated his birthday on Wednesday, Jan. 31.
Olkewicz's time as president of the Para Professional Association was not without controversy. Members of the union started a petition several months ago demanding his ouster claiming they were kept in the dark about contract negotiations as the district and union squabbled over whether Olkewicz could perform full-time union work rather than serving as a paraprofessional, according to NJ.com.
The petition attracted 175 signatures. The A contract was eventually approved by the board of education last month, the district said.
Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
